Designed by R.M. Fischer and opened in 1988 (three years after Rector Park’s opening), the Rector Gate uses curlicues, trapezoids and circles to form a 1950’s science-fiction inspired portal from Battery Park City to the city beyond. The 50-foot archway also serves as a futuristic ode to the city’s many skyscrapers.
“From coastal resiliency and sustainable green practices to the preservation of affordable housing, world-class public art, and vibrant, year-round programming in award-winning public spaces, Battery Park City leads the way in many of the measures that makes cities livable."
